In today’s article, I would like to mention our guest contributor, Mr Koon Yew Yin in his recent feature in The 2015 Prestige Power 300. The purpose of writing this is to encourage people to do charity and also to “satisfy his ego”.
Mr Koon Yew Yin reckons that ego can be a very powerful push factor for achieving success. But it also can be very destructive. You must bear in mind that more than half of the problems in the world are due to ego.
Claimed himself as one of the poorest on the selected list, Mr Koon Yew Yin is no less in the proportion of the amount that he has given away in comparison to his wealth. Interestingly, his way of giving scholarships to help poor students to complete their tertiary education has a multiplying effect. Until now, there are more than 300 scholarships are being distributed.
What sets his program afar from others, Mr Koon Yew Yin does not impose his scholars to serve him as repayment, the only agreement is for the awarded students to give back when they are financially solvent! The intend is not only to encourage more people to give back to the community, this will spur the multiplying effect to reach more and more poor and deserving people to get better education.
Currently, there are 200 scholars have graduated and Mr Koon Yew Yin expects their return soon to begin the charity endeavour along with him. He believes as time goes by, more and more graduates will help other poor students.
At the end of the conversation, Mr Koon Yew Yin noted that he was selected due to the system that he created in helping poor students.
“I am 82 years old and I know for sure I cannot take any money with me when I die. I have written in my WILL that all my remaining assets will be for charity” – Koon Yew Yin.
