Q & ACategory: InvestmentInvestment Tips for Fresh Graduate
Ang Z.K asked 9 years ago

Hi KC Lau,
Good day.

I understands that if we put money in FD that gives us 3%++ interest in return will not catch up with the rate of inflation in Malaysia. Hence, putting money in bank is equal to losing money.

I am a fresh graduate that has a saving around RM 10k++ and I wish to do some relatively smaller risk investment, besides FD, for example REIT.

As of now, I have a day job and I do freelancing by taking mobile app projects, mostly Android and Website Design. My current financial goal is to turn the money I earned from doing freelancing jobs into a passive income by doing investments.

Do you have any tips for fresh-grad like me that have minimal capital and wants to invest to make extra / passive income?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Ang,

It is great that you realised this fact at a young age. For investment, you can look into these area:
1. Unit trust – for passive investor who rather let fund manager do the job, and glad to pay the relatively higher management fee and upfront cost of investing.

2. REIT – which is an option too without holding cost. It is also considered as stocks already.

The best investment in stocks and properties.
3. Stocks – this is investment in business. Good business will grow and make a lot of money from their capital.

4. Properties – due to the favourable financing in Malaysia, investor can leverage up and therefore gain high return with limited capital.

As a fresh graduate, I would say it is best for you to invest in books, courses and mentorship which will increase your success rate, and shorten your learning curve immensely. Then when you are able make more money, you will know how to invest wisely.
