Dear Mike,
Nice to hear from you. About your questions:
1. I personally invest directly in stocks and properties. The key is to know how to do it safely and profitably, over the long-term. The method I use is called Value Investing, which is to buy good assets (stocks or properties), at a low price. I would suggest that you learn this too.

2. For insurance protection, the best value you can get is to buy Investment-linked policy by paying the lowest premium possible with the maximum coverage possible. Every insurance company has different way to generate the quotation. If you get the right agent, they will be able to quote you the minimum premium for the protection your require.
