  • Follow a clear process instead of guesswork, hype and endless chart-watching.

  • To trade in and out of positions every few weeks.
  • Results within three months. This is a long-term approach.
  • To skip the reading. You will learn to work through real financial statements.
A personal note from Ian Tai

Why I helped build Growth Vault

I want to be upfront with you: this page is written by me, Ian Tai. It is not a corporate sales pitch. I co-developed Growth Vault with my mentor and business partner, KC Lau, and I would like you to know exactly why.

When I started investing seriously, I struggled with the same things most Malaysians do. Too much noise and too many tips, but no strategy. Hours of research that left me no more confident than when I started. And a constant fear of making an expensive mistake.

Working alongside KC, I saw how his approach cuts through all of that. He doesn't hand you a list of stocks to buy. He teaches you how to think, how to evaluate, and how to hold with conviction.

We built Growth Vault to save you years of trial and error, to give you a structured framework from day one, and to help you get small early wins that build real confidence.

I wish I'd had this when I started. It would have saved me a great deal of time, money and stress.

Borrowed genius

You don't need to be a genius. You need a system worth copying.

KC wasn't born a natural investor. He has no finance background and comes from a working-class family. What he realised early was that the smartest move wasn't to reinvent the wheel — it was to study people who had already succeeded.

So he read, listened and learned from the best, especially Warren Buffett. Buffett's principles are simple, logical and still useful in today's volatile markets. You don't need to be brilliant. You need sound principles applied with discipline.

Investors who follow these time-tested ideas build real, lasting wealth. Those who try to figure it out alone usually pay for it in losses, stress and wasted years.

Why this matters to your money

Too many investors lose money chasing tips instead of following a proven strategy. They buy and sell on rumours, target prices and emotion — and that is the single biggest reason they lose thousands, sometimes millions, in hard-earned capital.

It doesn't have to be this way. When you know how to build, manage and grow a portfolio with a clear system, you can:

  • Avoid the costly mistakes that derail most investors
  • Protect your wealth across all market conditions
  • Improve your odds of real capital appreciation and consistent dividend income

That is exactly what Growth Vault is designed to do.

Investors losing capital by trading on tips and rumours
The method

Value investing works because it runs on facts, not hype

Value investing means buying great businesses at attractive prices and holding them long term as they grow in value.

Value investors decide using solid evidence — annual reports, financial statements and clear business strategies. Instead of chasing tips, rumours or price predictions, they focus on genuinely understanding the companies they own.

In practice, that means three things:

  • Study the company's business model
  • Evaluate management quality and growth plans
  • Assess its true valuation — not just today's price chart

Do this, and you no longer need stock tips or chart patterns to tell you what to do. You make your own informed decisions. That is the real freedom investing can offer you.

Analysing a company's annual report and financial statements
The currency problem

A 4% yield in Ringgit is not the same as a 4% yield abroad

I started as a dividend investor and I still am one today. Dividend investing is easier and well suited to beginners who want reliable passive income. In my early years my portfolio was small — small dividends, minor gains and losses — but those years taught me the most.

They led me to Singapore's top-tier companies. Today I receive dividends for eight to nine months of every year, regardless of what the market or the economy is doing.

Ian Tai's SGD dividend receipts across the year
Ian's dividend receipts, spread across eight to nine months a year.
Dividend payment record from Singapore-listed holdings
Predominantly SGD-denominated, by deliberate choice.

Why Ringgit dividends alone may not be enough

Over the last five years the Ringgit has depreciated against the Singapore Dollar at roughly 2% a year. If you earn a 4–5% dividend yield in MYR, a meaningful slice of that is quietly eaten by currency depreciation.

Your yield is real. Your buying power is what erodes. A 4–5% yield in a stronger currency is a very different outcome from the same yield in MYR — which is why diversifying beyond the Ringgit isn't just smart, it's necessary.

Why I didn't stop at Singapore

I have real respect for the Singapore market — political stability, excellent corporate governance and a tax structure that favours dividend investors. I invested there for years because the opportunities were solid.

But Singapore is a nation of just over five million people. However well run it is, that means a limited talent pool, a smaller market and fewer industries. Eventually I realised that if I stayed only in Singapore, I would end up owning most of the good companies there — which is concentration risk in another form.

I wanted more industries, more geographies, more world-class brands. To own the best businesses in the world, I had to look in a bigger, deeper market. That is why I turned to the U.S.

Part 02

How KC actually did it — one company, step by step

Skin in the game

The question isn't what KC bought. It's how he decided.

One reason I trust KC as a mentor is simple: he doesn't just talk about investing, he does it. Over the years he has built a substantial U.S. portfolio holding companies like Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, Costco, Meta and Berkshire Hathaway.

Most of us have heard of those businesses. So the interesting question was never which stocks did KC buy. It was:

  • How did he choose them?
  • How did he know when they were worth buying?
  • How does he manage them through the ups and downs?

That is what separates successful investors from everyone else — not memorising a stock list, but knowing what you understand about a business before you invest, how to value it rationally, and what your plan is when prices fall.

Worked example

Case study: Berkshire Hathaway

Here is KC's actual investment in Berkshire Hathaway, step by step — so you can see the reasoning, not just the outcome.

2012 – 2018 · The first position

KC first came across Berkshire Hathaway in 2000. He admits he wasn't equipped then to see why long-term ownership beats trading. It took until 2012 for him to study the company properly — by which point he understood value investing well enough to act on it.

His homework focused on how Berkshire used its insurance operations to build a diversified conglomerate and a stock portfolio worth billions. From 2000 to 2012, he found the company had consistently:

  • Grown group revenues year after year
  • Delivered billions in net earnings year after year
  • Generated billions in operating cash flow year after year
  • Expanded its stock portfolio

On that evidence, KC bought his first Berkshire shares at US$120–130 in 2013, and added more at US$150–170 in 2016–2017 as the underlying businesses kept improving.

In August 2018 he sold the entire position at around US$200 a share and used the proceeds as the down payment on a residential property in the U.S. for US$555,000. He has since moved to Taipei, and the property is valued at about US$760,000 today.

2019 – Present · Buying it back

After selling, KC kept tracking Berkshire's results because he intended to buy back in. He picked up some shares in 2019, but the real opportunity arrived in 2020–2021.

During Covid-19, Berkshire fell below US$200 to the US$170–180 range — lower than the price he had sold at in 2018. Yet by every measure he cared about, the business was stronger than the one he first bought in 2012. Since then it had continued to grow revenues, earnings, operating cash flow and its equity portfolio.

So in 2020–2021 the company was both fundamentally stronger than before and cheaper. Armed with that, KC bought more while most of the market was fearful about lockdowns.

That position is now up two to three times on capital appreciation.

KC's biggest regret

He wishes he had learned value investing much earlier in life.

KC bought his first Berkshire shares in his early thirties. Before that he tried trading in his twenties and lost money, then parked everything in unit trusts in his late twenties because it felt safer.

Had he understood value investing in his early twenties, he could have bought Berkshire at around US$50 a share. The gain wouldn't have been two to three times over a few years — it would have been many times that over twenty-five.

That is the real cost of waiting: not the money you lose, but the compounding you never start.

What three years of waiting costs you

Same monthly amount, same return, same finishing line. The only difference is when you start.

Two compounding paths over 25 years: starting today versus starting in three years
Start today Start in three years
—If you start today, after 25 years
—If you start in three years
—The cost of waiting

You contribute for fewer years, but the bigger loss is compounding time you never get back — which is exactly what KC describes above. Illustrative only. It assumes a fixed return every year, which no market delivers. Real returns vary, can be negative, and this is not a projection, a promise or investment advice.

What this looks like for you

Building this kind of portfolio is simpler than it looks

You just watched the whole method: focus on fundamentals, value carefully so you don't overpay, then hold long enough for compounding to do the work.

Confidence

You know you're buying strong businesses with genuine staying power.

Appreciation

Better odds of sustainable capital growth, in line with how these companies actually grow.

Lower risk

You avoid overpriced and fundamentally weak stocks because you checked the numbers.

Peace of mind

You follow a clear strategy instead of reacting to market noise.

An honest word

You can absolutely do this on your own

What KC and I do isn't a secret formula. It is simple, proven and timeless — millions of investors worldwide have used these principles. They are learnable, repeatable and practical.

If you want to start today without us, here is genuinely what to do:

  • Download and read the annual and quarterly reports of companies that interest you
  • Compile their key operating and financial data
  • Calculate valuation ratios to check whether the price is fair
  • Build a watch list of companies worth owning, and be ready when the price is right

All of that information is free and available to anyone willing to put in the time. If you're willing to learn, you can do this yourself.

What we sell is not the information. It's the shortcut through the trial and error.

Reading annual reports and compiling financial data independently

"But I don't have time to study financial reports"

Then open a brokerage account today and start buying U.S. stocks immediately. Nobody is stopping you — that's what most people do.

But it isn't how we invest. We didn't grow our portfolios to seven figures by buying without research. If you were managing a seven-figure portfolio, would you be comfortable picking stocks blind? How would you know which companies are reliable and worth holding, or whether a stock is undervalued or overpriced, without checking the numbers?

This isn't about being a finance wizard. It's about being business-minded, because investing is a serious business.

Yes, it takes time to learn. So does everything worthwhile — a doctor trains for years before treating patients, an accountant studies before handling other people's money.

You can't shortcut the work. But you can shortcut the learning curve.

Shortening the learning curve of value investing with structured guidance

So how long does learning this actually take?

We won't sugarcoat it. KC and I have each spent more than ten years learning, studying and refining our approach — thousands of hours studying businesses, reading statements and managing real portfolios through real cycles.

That sounds like a lot, because it is. But you don't have to take ten years to get started, and you don't have to work it out alone.

If we walk you through the entire process step by step, using educational materials and case studies on the world's top 1% companies, your confidence moves from 20–30% to 80–90% — and your learning curve compresses from two or three years into a few months.

That is precisely what Growth Vault was created to do.

Investing doesn't have to be complicated

The seven modules, in order

Each one builds on the last. Work through them at your own pace, and revisit them whenever you need to.

Module 01

The "big money" in stock investing

Investing success can be copied. Through a case study, you'll see exactly how savvy investors build long-term wealth — and we'll pull out the three focus points that make a growth portfolio profitable and sustainable.

Module 1 — The big money in stock investing
Module 02

Five viewpoints on risk

Is stock investing risky? If the ups and downs, bulls, bears and crashes worry you, this module shows how the top 1% of investors actually handle risk — so you can build a portfolio that survives the bad years.

Module 2 — Five viewpoints on risk
Module 03

The system to build a U.S. stock portfolio

There are more than 6,000 stocks listed in the United States and most are not investible. You'll get a working system for separating the top 1% from the rest, so your time, energy and capital go to the winners.

Module 3 — The system to build a U.S. stock portfolio
Module 04

Fundamentals: reading financial statements

The best investors can interpret a set of accounts. Starting from the ground up, you'll learn to read a company's annual report and judge for yourself whether it's financially solid. Once you can do this, you stop needing tips.

Module 4 — Reading financial statements
Module 05

Valuation: how not to overpay

However good a company is, you don't want to overpay for it. You'll learn three valuation metrics for deciding whether a top 1% company is undervalued, fairly valued or overvalued — so you buy at better prices than most of the market.

Module 5 — Valuation
Module 06

Portfolio management

Short-term prices are volatile and unpredictable — which is why most people call investing risky. The top 1% treat that volatility as an ally. You'll learn to turn crashes and corrections into your buying opportunities, so bad markets stop frightening you.

Module 6 — Portfolio management
Module 07

Allocation across Malaysia, Singapore and the U.S.

Bursa, SGX and the U.S. markets each behave differently. You'll learn the characteristics of each so you can design a portfolio that balances growth, dividends and liquidity across all three.

Module 7 — Portfolio allocation across Malaysia, Singapore and the U.S.

We'll teach you every step of the way

The price

A fraction of what one weekend workshop costs

A typical one- or two-day investing workshop in Malaysia runs RM5,000 to RM10,000. And after those few days, most people leave overwhelmed and unsure where to start.

Real mastery takes longer than a weekend. Nobody becomes an expert in three days — you need a structured approach you can return to whenever you want. That's what we built.

Once you learn these skills, you keep them. They don't expire when the weekend ends.

The Growth Investing Challenge

How to qualify for the 3-year refund

Three steps. No fine print designed to trip you up.

Watch and learn

Work through the tutorial videos inside the membership. They give you what you need to evaluate and choose companies from our 30+ top 1% stocks.

Build a portfolio of five

Pick any five companies from the list that meet the criteria: demonstrated growth in sales, profits and operating cash flow, and a P/E ratio no higher than 28 and close to its long-term historical average.

Hold for three years

Buy and hold all five for three full years. If the combined portfolio shows a capital loss at the end — even RM1 — you qualify for a full refund of your membership fees.

A worked example

Say you join on 31/3/2025 and invest RM100,000 across five stocks:

Example of five stocks purchased across 2025
The five purchases, with the last completed on 5/5/2025.

Three years after the fifth purchase, you're still holding all five and the capital gains and losses look like this (excluding dividends):

Portfolio position after three years
Total portfolio market value after three years
Market value of RM70,000 — 30% below the RM100,000 invested.

Submit the statements showing you bought and held those five stocks for three years, and we refund every ringgit of membership fee you paid for Growth Vault over that period.

Figures shown are an illustrative example, not a projection or a representation of expected returns. Individual results may vary.

What if I sell one of the five before three years?

That stock no longer qualifies. If you buy Stock A on 30/4/2025 and sell it on 5/1/2026, the holding period is under three years and it falls outside the guarantee.

The reason is straightforward: the guarantee exists to back long-term ownership as a way to compound net worth. We're long-term investors, not short-term traders, and the promise only makes sense on those terms.

Terms you should know before you start

  • Open to paid Growth Vault members who have completed the training modules.
  • All five companies must be chosen from the Growth Vault List and meet the stated fundamental and valuation criteria at the time of purchase.
  • Each of the five stocks must be held for at least three years from its own purchase date. Your portfolio is assessed three years after the fifth stock is bought.
  • Keep your brokerage statements. They are the proof we use to validate a claim, so please retain contract notes and holding statements for the full period.
  • Capital value is assessed excluding dividends received.
  • Refunds cover membership fees paid to Growth Vault. They do not cover investment losses, brokerage charges or currency movements.

Growth Vault improved my investing skills

"The modules, case studies, investing thesis and stock list have all helped develop my investing skills and improve my finances. As I diversify beyond Malaysia and Singapore, I've learnt more evaluation methods for growth stocks and how to understand the business behind future growth in the U.S. markets. I'm now improving my allocation across all three markets for long-term holding."

This programme made stocks easy to understand

"I never thought learning about stocks could be so easy — this course completely changed my perspective. Before taking it I was losing a lot of money in the market, but now I invest with confidence. Thanks to this programme I've achieved a 15% return on investment in just one year."

Clarity and conviction

"I'm truly honoured to be part of the Growth Vault community. As a long-time student of KC Lau, his insights shaped the foundation of my financial mindset. Through Growth Vault I've learned to evaluate stocks with clarity and long-term conviction — something I used to struggle with. Today I feel far more confident and well-prepared for my financial future."

Detailed studies

"Well done Ian on the precise study of Amex, playing back the case across the last three decades. It helps me and many who never owned stocks before 2010 understand what a market crash actually feels like, and how to prepare for one emotionally and financially. Ian really takes the time to deep-dive into a case study — it opened up another horizon in my perspective on how quality, fundamental stocks take on a crisis and come out stronger."

Why we built this

This isn't really about money. It's about what money buys you.

Picture no more restless nights wondering whether you're doing enough for your family's future. No more guessing with your investments. Instead, a portfolio of world-class companies quietly compounding, year after year.

Picture sitting down with your spouse over coffee and talking about your financial plans with genuine excitement rather than anxiety. Telling your children about the shares you own in companies they already know. Leaving them a legacy that isn't only ringgit and sen, but wisdom and security.

It's about knowing your work will keep paying you back long after you clock out for the last time.

We built Growth Vault to help everyday Malaysians grow their wealth with clarity, discipline and confidence. We don't just want you to join — we want you to be different because of it.

That's why we back it with a 30-day no-questions-asked refund, a fee that's fixed for life, and a three-year performance guarantee.

Questions

Before you join

Why not just buy an S&P 500 index fund?

A fair question — and Buffett himself has recommended exactly that for most people. We are not going to pretend he didn't.

If you never want to read an annual report, a low-cost index fund is a sensible choice, and we would genuinely rather you did that than join Growth Vault and never open the modules.

Here is the honest case for learning to choose:

  • An index buys everything in it, mediocre companies included. This programme is about owning the top 1% and knowing why you own them.
  • The skill travels. Once you can read a set of accounts you can judge a company on Bursa or SGX too, where index products are thinner on the ground — that is what Module 7 covers.
  • Understanding what you own is what lets you hold through a crash instead of selling at the bottom. Most investors aren't ruined by picking the wrong company; they're ruined by selling the right one in a panic.
  • The two aren't mutually exclusive. An index fund as your core, with a handful of researched companies alongside it, is a perfectly coherent plan.

Buy the index and sleep well, or learn to judge a business for yourself. Both are respectable. Only one of them is a skill you keep.

How much capital do I need to start?

Less than most people assume. Many brokers offering U.S. markets support fractional shares, so you can begin with a modest sum and still own a slice of an expensive stock.

That said, the Growth Investing Challenge asks you to hold five companies. If you want meaningful diversification across five positions from day one, plan for a few thousand ringgit rather than a few hundred. You can also build towards five positions over time — there's no requirement to buy them all at once.

Start with an amount you're genuinely comfortable leaving invested for several years.

Do I need accounting or finance knowledge?

No. Module 4 teaches you to read financial statements from the ground up, and Module 5 covers valuation using three straightforward metrics.

Neither KC nor Ian came from a finance background. The whole programme is built on the assumption that you're starting from scratch, and the monthly case studies exist so you can watch the method applied to a real company before trying it yourself.

How many hours a week does this take?

Take your time. One to two hours a week is enough in the first few months while you work through the modules, and it gets easier as the knowledge compounds — reading your second annual report is far faster than reading your first.

After that, the monthly live case study is the main commitment, and you can attend live or watch the recording whenever suits you.

Which broker should I use for U.S. stocks?

Any licensed broker that gives you access to the NYSE and NASDAQ will do. KC and Ian use a mix of Malaysian and international brokers, and the method doesn't depend on which one you pick.

What matters is that the broker is licensed to operate in your jurisdiction, that you understand its fee structure, and that it supports long-term holding rather than pushing you to trade. We're not affiliated with any broker and we don't earn commissions on your choice.

Does Growth Vault cover Malaysian and Singapore stocks too?

The research, stock list and case studies focus on U.S.-listed companies on the NYSE and NASDAQ — that's the point of the programme.

Module 7 covers allocation across Bursa, SGX and the U.S., so you'll understand how the three markets differ and how to balance growth, dividends and liquidity across them. If your main interest is Malaysian and Singaporean dividend stocks, Dividend Vault is the better starting point.

What about U.S. withholding tax on dividends?

U.S.-listed companies withhold tax on dividends paid to non-resident investors, and Malaysia does not have a tax treaty with the U.S. that reduces this rate. Your broker generally deducts it before the dividend reaches you.

This is one reason Growth Vault focuses on capital appreciation from great businesses rather than dividend yield alone — and why Module 7 covers how the U.S., SGX and Bursa complement each other in a portfolio. For advice on your own tax position, please consult a licensed tax professional.

Can I pay by bank transfer?

Yes. Email support@kclau.com and we'll send you the bank details and instructions.

One thing to note: bank transfer payments cannot auto-renew, so you'll need to send payment manually each year when your membership is due.

Is the payment set to renew automatically?

If you pay by credit or debit card, your subscription renews on the same date the following year. Your rate is locked under Guarantee #2, so the amount never increases.

Join with the current coupon and the rate locked in is RM998/year. You renew at RM998/year every year, for as long as you stay subscribed — it is not a first-year-only discount.

If you pay by bank transfer, auto-renewal isn't available and you'll renew manually.

When can I cancel?

Whenever you like. Cancel within the first 30 days and you get a full refund, no questions asked.

Cancel after the 30 days and there's no refund for that year, but you keep full access to the members' area until your next scheduled renewal date.

How do I cancel?

Two ways, whichever you prefer:

  • By email. Write to support@kclau.com and tell us you'd like to cancel. No phone call or WhatsApp needed. We'll send a confirmation — if you don't hear back within 24 hours, nudge us at kclau.com/support.
  • Yourself. Log in at courses.kclau.com, click your name in the top-right corner, go to My Account, then the Billing tab — you can update your card or cancel there.

Either way, you keep full access until your next billing date.

How long do I keep access to the recordings and notes?

For as long as your membership is active. That includes every module, the full back catalogue of monthly case study recordings, the slides, the downloadable resources, the stock list and the summarised notes — all of which we keep adding to.

Your next step

Where will you be in three years?

You can keep reading about investing, or you can start owning the businesses you already believe in. The compounding only begins once you do.
