Behind the Scenes at Astro Talent Quest 2007

2007 Astro 新秀大赛 (Astro Talent Quest) was held at Penang International Sports Arena ( PIZZA hut PISA) on 11th August. I got the entry ticket from one of my client, Mr. Sea who is also the vocal coach of the entire event. I never thought of wanting to watch the show live, because I didn’t install Astro package and already missed all the pre-final shows. Once again, thanks to my friend Mr. Sea for the free tickets.
Since PISA is just a walking distance from my house, we were not in a hurry. When we drove there about 7.15pm, I found that there is not much different if I just parked my car at home. We could take the No.11 bus …….. — walk with our legs. There is no parking lot left.

Sitting beside Mr.Sea is great. He knows the shows from inside out because he personally coached all the contestant since March. During the rehearsal, he was there all the time. He told me a lot of insider’s news during the whole event! This includes “who is going to be the champion winner”.

First, I found many nicely dressed youngsters on the row below mine. They are the loser contestants that couldn’t make it to the final.

The show started sharp on 8pm. Unlike most concert, this show is also a live broadcast which require precise timing & synchronization. Wondering what we’re doing during commercial break?

Image: SHE and the two finalists.

I think the lousiest part of the show is the final part when the two finalist rap SHE’s song 中国话 (Mandarin Language). I thought it is a singing competition! But the judges had to decide who is the champion just by listening to the rapers rappers.

Mr. Sea said SHE only 交行货 (not giving their best). They never walked around the stage. If we are to be paid thousands ringgit for a 20 minutes performance, we should at least shake some fans’ hands, and showed up during rehearsal.

Finally the show is over. My friend was having a big relief because this assignment is completely over too. He operates vocal training studios at Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur. If you dream to be a superstar singer someday, taking his lesson will definitely ease your learning curve.

Money lesson today: Concert ticket is a luxurious item. Don’t spend over your budget for this. Have some friends who works in the entertainment industry and you will get free concert tickets from time to time.

  5. Overall the event is mediocre at best. There is no crowd control at all among other minuses. I too find S.H.E. didn’t do much, most of the time, just standing there.
